Former Pemex CEO Carlos Trevino Arrested in U.S., Will Be Deported to Mexico for Trial

MEXICO CITY – Carlos Trevino, a former chief executive of Mexico’s state oil company Pemex, has been arrested in the United States and will be deported to face corruption charges in his home country, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Thursday.

Speaking at her daily news conference, Sheinbaum confirmed that Trevino’s arrest was the culmination of a multi-year effort by Mexican authorities.

“It’s an extradition request that has been ongoing for about five years. He has finally been located and will be deported in the coming days. His trial will take place in Mexico,” the president stated.

The charges against Trevino stem from a complaint filed by another former Pemex director, Emilio Lozoya. According to the complaint, Trevino is accused of receiving approximately 4 million pesos in bribes to authorize a contract for the Ethylene XXI plant. The project has been linked to Braskem, a subsidiary of the Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht, which has been at the center of a massive international corruption scandal.

Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office has formally accused Trevino of criminal association and operations with illicit proceeds. An arrest warrant was first issued for him in September 2021 after he failed to appear for a court hearing.

Trevino was appointed CEO of Pemex in November 2017, during the administration of former President Enrique Pena Nieto, and held the position until the end of that term in late 2018.
