Major Milestone for ‘Made-in-India’: First Domestic Semiconductor Chip to Launch by Year-End, PM Modi Announces

NEW DELHI – In a landmark announcement during his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that India’s first domestically manufactured semiconductor chip will be available by the end of this year, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s push for technological self-reliance.

The Prime Minister’s announcement signals a significant victory for the “Make in India” initiative and the government’s strategic focus on building a robust domestic technology ecosystem. This achievement is set to enhance India’s economic security and reduce its dependence on international supply chains amid a complex global trade environment.

“The day is not far when India will be self-reliant in the semiconductor sector,” Modi stated, emphasizing the country’s broader ambition to achieve self-sufficiency in critical areas, including energy and essential minerals.

This groundbreaking development is backed by significant government action and investment. The Union Cabinet recently approved four new semiconductor manufacturing projects, valued at approximately ₹4,600 crore ($550 million), under the ambitious India Semiconductor Mission.

Underscoring the project’s global appeal and viability, the initiative has attracted investment from industry giants such as U.S. chipmaker Intel and aerospace leader Lockheed Martin.

The momentum is building across the country, with six additional semiconductor plants reportedly under construction in states like Gujarat, Assam, and Uttar Pradesh. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently confirmed that these state-of-the-art facilities will soon produce India’s first truly “Made-in-India” chip, turning a long-held national goal into a reality.

The semiconductor initiative is a cornerstone of a wider national strategy for self-reliance. To bolster the country’s energy security, Prime Minister Modi also announced the launch of a “national deep-water exploration” mission aimed at discovering and developing domestic energy resources.

The impending launch of its first homegrown chip is poised to be a transformative moment, positioning India as a key player in the global technology landscape and paving the way for a new era of innovation and economic resilience.
